Where do I Begin?

It can be overwhelming if you are a new scrapbooker looking to get started. You can spend hundreds of dollars in supplies, bring them home and feel overwhelmed. I floundered when I started taking this hobby seriously. I overbought (I still do, but don't tell my husband!) and I would spread out all my supplies and then struggle to complete one layout because I didn’t know what to do with all my stash. I would buy scrapbooking idea books, and then try to recreate a layout and get frustrated because I didn’t know what I was doing, and my layout would look nothing like the one I was trying to copy.

I can pinpoint exactly when I hit my scrapbooking stride and got my scrapbooking “superpowers” as my son started calling them – it was when I realized what my scrapbooking style was.

When going through scrapbooking magazines, I would tag my favorite layouts, ones that I wanted to copy. I realized that my eye gravitated towards photo heavy layouts that were bright and colorful. When I studied these layouts, I realized that many of my favorites were all designed by the same scrapper – Allison Davis (you’ll hear me mention her a lot!). I loved the photo arrangements she used, the color combinations, her journaling style and titles. I looked at what products she used and invested in those. I also discovered she had classes that you could purchase and download. That was when I became a productive scrapper. I was never at a loss for inspiration after that, and when I sat down to scrapbook, I knew what I was doing and how I was going to do it!

So, here’s what you can do to find your style and get your scrapbooking superpowers:

· Look at scrapbook galleries and notice that layouts that catch your eye. Great online sources are Allison Davis 4 SG (Scrapbook Generation), Page Maps, Scrapbook.com gallery and of course Pinterest and YouTube

· See if some of your favorite crafters have blogs, or classes you can take

· Make a list of supplies and manufacturers your favorite scrappers tend to use that you could see yourself using on your layouts

· Pin, print, or save some of their layouts that you want to copy.

You may notice that your own style and preferences may change and that’s ok! This is just your starting point!
