Toilet Paper Mummies

Writer: Amy Cunniff-BleauAmy Cunniff-Bleau

Oh, the things you do with your kids . . .

This is a fun memory! Zach had just finished a unit on Egypt in school, and for their end of unit activity day the class made each other into toilet paper mummies. This type of activity is something that Zach would absolutely love to do every day. It's creative, involves movement and is just plain fun.

It was Jim's birthday and Zach insisted we needed a party game, and he just happened to have the perfect idea . . . toilet paper mummies. Because it was only the five of us, I graciously offered to be the photographer. To make it more fun, Zach set a timer and the race was on to see who could make the best mummy.

There was lots of laughing, smack talking, and noise as Jim and Zach went to work. Alyssia and Caleb were good sports. When the timer went off, I declared the game a tie. Then they began the work of unraveling the mummies and cleaning up the toilet paper.

As I look at these pictures I just laugh. We did this in November of 2019, totally unsuspecting of the pandemic to come. After the toilet paper shortage of 2020, I can't believe how much toilet paper we wasted! On the other hand, after COVID, there were ample scrapbooking paper collections with cool toilet paper embellishments.

Scrapbooking Tips

This layout is an example of thinking outside the box when it comes to scrapbooking supplies. When I get paper, I store it in together with similar collections - all my Christmas paper and embellishments are together, summer is all together, and so on. However, sometimes I have to go outside the obvious category of supplies for the perfect embellishments.

I had printed these photos and filed them with Jim's birthday photos, because at the time I assumed I would be using birthday paper. As I got ready to scrapbook, I remembered this toilet paper pattern paper and pulled out my pandemic scrapbooking supplies.

These pictures would have been fine if they were scrapbooked with birthday papers, but this layout is downright perfect!

Another time I think outside of the box with supplies is with my abundance of Christmas collections. Many times, there are gorgeous papers in accent colors that aren't the traditional reds and greens. At times I have had pinks, powder blues, lime green and navy blues with my Christmas papers. I have grabbed for these papers when I'm working on non-holiday themed papers.

There was a Simple Stories birthday collection that had the perfect color combination to match Zach's school field day pictures, so I used my birthday papers. Many birthday collections have bright colors, so I use them for summer layouts as well.

Don't be afraid to think outside of the box when planning your next layout!
