When Dave and I learned that we would be raising a child in a wheelchair we had to adjust a lot of our dreams. We loved traveling together and discovering new places and creating our own adventures whether it was visiting an ostrich farm in Aruba to taking the Bridal Veil Falls tour while visiting Niagara Falls. One day, we envisioned doing the same with our children. Although we might not be able to everything we planned, we discovered places to explore that we might have missed if we were not looking for accessible attractions.
We discovered that venues like museums, zoos and theaters were super accessible, and the boys would have a great time! When they were little, we would play up how much fun we were going to have and how exciting it would be to see all the animals, exhibits, etc. - and it absolutely worked. Even now at 15 & 16 years old, the boys love museums, historical sites, zoos, aquariums, monuments and anything along those lines. In their own words, they "geeked out" when Jim and I took them to Washington DC.
When I remarried Jim, although he and the girls prefer adventures of a more physical nature such as hunting, skiing, soccer, wrestling and hiking, they were up to go with us on ours. Alyssia especially was willing to join the fun - and to my absolute delight enjoyed posing for pictures and getting to the boys to do so as well.
So regardless of your physical state, and to quote my favorite Disney Pixar movie, "Adventure is out there!"
Scrapbooking Tips
This week I am posting three zoo layouts where I used Doodlebug Design Inc. paper and embellishments. I absolutely love the happy look and bright colors this company uses! The stickers especially are also so darn cute, and I was determined to "bash my stash" and uses every cute paper and sticker for the layouts of trip to the Seneca Falls Zoo in Rochester, NY.
One trick I use when creating my page titles are to look for any stickers I can incorporate into my title. The wooden sign that said "ZOO" was perfect! I finished off the title by spelling out the full name of the zoo with my Tiny Type letter stickers. Tiny Type letter stickers are awesome! There are a must have in my stash of supplies because they are so versatile.
I also do not hesitate to cover up white space on my photos. Sometimes a title or journaling actually looks better placed directly on a photo - it can also help draw the eye to certain details.
Check back in a couple of days to see another "adventure" layout of our trip to the zoo.
