Although these pictures were taken in 2013, it took me a while to scrapbook them. They are pictures of the time Dave took 6-year-old Caleb and 4-year-old Zach to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, NH. We had gone to New Hampshire so I could go to the Creating Keepsakes Convention, and Dave and the boys would swim in the hotel pool and go about the town while I was taking classes and shopping for scrapbooking supplies. We would meet for dinner and the boys would tell me all about the day's adventures.
We made this trip a couple times as a family and the boys looked forward to the weekend almost as much as I did.
This trip was memorable for Caleb and Zach. There were model shuttles, simulators, and a ton of hands-on exhibits. Dave took pictures with his phone, and I absolutely treasure these photos. Dave adored being a daddy to these little boys and there isn't anything he wouldn't do for them. The three of them took many adventures in the short time they had together, and Dave would tease them and say, "Don't tell Mommy we had so much fun." I love that he took pictures for me though and I can record the memory for them.
Scrapbooking Tips
I can take no credit for the left-side of this layout. This was an Allison Davis kit and when I first saw it, I immediately thought of these photos. Anytime I scrapbook photos of the boys and Dave, I try to make it extra special because there are a limited number of photos of them together. I want to make the layouts as special as the time they spent together was. This page kit had enough WOW to create the perfect backdrop for my photos.
I learned two new techniques putting together this layout. The first is I splattered the black cardstock with white acrylic paint. I'll admit, this technique did not come naturally to me - it took me a couple attempts to get this splattered look. I even searched YouTube videos so I could try and watch how this was done. My first attempt looked like I painted the page, and it didn't have a splattered look.
Another technique that was new to me was stitching the overlapping circles. I absolutely loved the look it gave my finished page, and although I was not new to stitching on my layouts, I had to pay close attention not to make a mistake. It was definitely worth the extra time.
I came up with ideas for the right-hand side of the layout. I wanted to include every photo Dave took but I couldn't really crop them down because I would lose too much of the subject matter. So, I came up with an interactive element to include all the photos.
I made the middle column of photos a mini waterfall "album" that you could remove from the page protector. I had the tab leftover from the page kit and added Doodlebug Design Tiny Type letters so it said, "pull."
The white arrows in this photo point out all the tabs that you flip to see the next photo. Like the tab, they were left over from the page kit. I deliberately adhered them so they would overlap the other photos on the layout to give a little extra visual interest.
Although this is not my typical layout style, I am pleased with the finished result. More importantly, when I showed the boys this layout they liked it, and Caleb said right away, "I remember that day!" And that was my goal.
