MONOPOLY

I am super proud of this layout! I came up with the idea for it all on my own without inspiration from anywhere else. I knew I had these photos and then when I saw the game board cut file on Silhouette Design Studio, this layout was born in my mind!

Zach had asked me to take him to see a play, and Caleb did not really want to go, so he challenged Jim to a game of Monopoly. However, this was not just any Monopoly game, it was the Uncharted version of the game. Uncharted is a video game that Caleb has fond memories of watching Dave play. Even though it was rated for teens, after Dave died, I let him play it when he asked me. He became obsessed with it - not just the game but learning about the people and places mentioned in the game. So, when he saw this Monopoly game that's what he wanted for his birthday!

Although he was very excited to play it, Caleb had trouble convincing family to play with him. But on this particular night, Jim took the bait. Both Jim and Caleb are SERIOUS Monopoly players, and they have drastically different strategies. Caleb will buy anything and everything - even mortgaging properties to get more - whereas Jim will go for many trips around the board before buying anything. But when Jim purchases something, he loads it up with houses and then hotels. Both guys play to win.

While Zach and I were watching Newsies, Jim and Caleb played Monopoly until Caleb went bankrupt. I got a text message when the game was over, announcing the winner. Apparently, it was a good game that lasted a while. As of today, I don't believe Caleb has beaten Jim in this particular game, but he's close!

Scrapbooking Tips:

The eye-catching feature of this layout is the brightly colored gameboard. I wasn't even thinking about these photos when I stumbled on this while scrolling through the Silhouette Design Studio looking for something else. I had a "lightbulb moment". I purchased the download and went to work . . .

I sized the game board to fit a 12x12 square and then started cutting. I decided to go with bright primary colors, seeing as my photo quality was not the best. I used the game pieces to accent the page. With the exception of the black piece of the gameboard, all my other pieces were cut from cardstock scraps I had in my stash.

My journaling strips were blending into the white cardstock background. To help them stand out, I very carefully drew a black border around my journaling. When I was done, I realized adding the black lines actually helped counterbalance the title.

A bold page requires a bold title. To create the title for the page, I looked at a Monopoly logo and tried to find the font most similar to what is on the box. Although the official Monopoly logo had a black border, I did not add one here. It actually made the title look too busy. It also didn't look quite right overlapping the black base of the game board.

This was a such a fun page to create and a fun night to remember!
