A Star is Born

My youngest son, Zach, surprised us all when he said he wanted to try out for the school musical. Zach is my quiet kid. He’s not shy when you get to know him, but until then you can’t get much out of him. So, when he said he wanted to audition, I was shocked and excited all at the same time.

He convinced his older brother to do the play with him - I’m sure it was because he didn’t want to go to the auditions alone. Both boys found a passion! They loved being part of the drama club and they acted their little hearts out. As a freshman, Zach got a small named role in the play Chicago. He played the murder victim Fred Casely, along with a few ensemble roles. We had fun teasing him because in the course of the play he had four death scenes! By the time the show was over, he had perfected the art of dying.

I took so many pictures between rehearsals and the multiple shows. It took me a long time to narrow down the ones that would make the cut into the scrapbook.

Scrapbooking Tips

To create this layout, I used Allison Davis’s January sketch from her Sketches 2024 class. It's safe to say that I use some type of sketch for 90% of the layouts I create. Sometimes my finished layout looks nothing like the original sketch I started with, but it saves so much time and jump starts my creativity. Even though I have been using sketches for years, I am loving the Sketches 2024 class and learning new tips and tricks.

Allison's sketch had a lot of stars which worked well with my photos. The stars made me think of Zach being a Broadway star, and the title “A Star is Born” fit perfectly on a large die cut star.

Another interesting note about this layout is the paper I used. One day while working on a totally different layout, I realized the colors I was using would work perfectly with these photos. But the paper was actually a pizza party themed collection designed by Scrapbook Generation! I was so happy with the finished look. It made me realize I need to think outside of the box more when going through my paper stash!

I wanted to be able to use multiple photos on this layout given the number of photos I took. To accomplish this, I printed them as 3x4 and trimmed most of them down to 3-inch squares to fill the space. Three of them I trimmed down to 2 3/4-inch squares and matted them to mimic the look of Instax Polaroid pictures. To learn how to print photos in various sizes, you can get step-by-step instructions on my blog post Using the Project Life App to Resize Photos. There are instructions with pictures for Apple and Android devices.

For some added details I used black Nuvo Vintage drops for the tiny black accents, and I did stitch on the large star where I placed my title.
